New research indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals buying these drugs must be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a return to original mass within about a year and a half.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Experts propose the way of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Users who have stopped the jabs describe a intense resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a switch flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Use
Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts caution that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
